After "Work Bitch," Britney Spears really whipped us into shape. But now, the femme fatale is shedding the dominatrix suit of her aggressive first Britney Jean single for a spritz of something lighter: "Perfume," a song she released Sunday (November 3) night.
The song begins with quick pizzicato strings and a melodic piano line. Deep piano chords play under Britney's voice as she sings, "I want to believe it's just you and me/ Sometimes it feels like there's three of us in here, baby."
"So I, I wait for you to call/ And I try to act natural/ Have you been thinkin' 'bout her or about me?" she belts in the chorus. "While I wait, I put on my perfume/ I want it all over you/ I'm gonna mark my territory."
Brit gets a little angsty, despite the sweet voice, adding, "I hope she smells like perfume." Paranoia and insecurity flood the song's lyrics as she sings about an unsure lover. The production pushes the track ahead at a moderate pace, with even cymbal crashes and the sawing bows of an orchestra.
Spears' eighth album, Britney Jean, is scheduled for a December 3 release date, and, according to Britney, recording the album has been an "incredible journey."
In a handwritten letter she delivered so her fans in October, she wrote, "I poured my heart and soul into this album, and it's been an incredible journey. I've learned a lot about myself, and as I am finishing, I am reminded of the incredible foundation that has supported me for the last 15 years," she wrote. "I can't believe this is my eighth studio album and I know I keep telling you that it is my most personal record yet, but it's true and I'm really proud of that."
