Horst Christian Simco, better known by his stage name Riff Raff, is not your average rapper. Notorious for his eccentric personality and remarkable style, the Houston MC seemed to be everywhere in 2013 — most recently, at one of the biggest dance-music festivals in the country.
MTV News caught up with Riff Raff after his set at TomorrowWorld, where he stood out as the only hip-hop act among more than 300 artists. But performing alongside DJs, producers and electronic musicians is nothing new to Riff Raff; he spent the summer touring with EDM acts and is signed to Diplo's Mad Decent label.
Despite his dabblings with other genres, his upcoming album Neon Icon is unquestionably hip-hop, as Drake, Snoop and A$AP Rocky are just a few of his features. Wiz Khalifa also shows up on the project, and Riff Raff explained to MTV News that the Pittsburgh MC is someone he just "vibes with."
"One of the tracks everybody likes is 'Castle Around My Heart' and he was one of the first people to step out to me and was like, 'I really want to get on that song.' " He explained. "And...I wouldn't want anybody else on that song."
Another person near and dear to Riff Raff is fellow rapper Action Bronson. The two are currently working on a collaborative album called Galaxy Gladiators, and Riff Raff promises it will not disappoint. "Every track that me and Action Bronson do is a hit song," he said.
That's because, according to Riff Raff, they are a perfect balance for collaboration. "Action Bronson is actually one of my best friends...I feel like he's more accepted than me and he's on another level than me in the hip-hop world, but I'm in another level in the entertainment world."
Riff Raff's album Neon Icon was originally slated for release the same day as Drake's Nothing Was the Same, but Riff Raff told MTV News the album has officially been pushed back, and is scheduled for release for either January 20 or January 30.
