'Walking Dead' Producer Takes Us Inside The AMC Spin-Off

'Walking Dead' executive producer Gale Anne Hurd talks about what might happen in the highly anticipated companion series.

Since it was announced a few short weeks ago, speculation has run high about what exactly AMC's spin-off (or companion series, as they're calling it) for "The Walking Dead" would be about. Ahead of the October 13 debut of season four, we hopped on the phone with "Walking Dead" executive producer Gale Anne Hurd, and while she remained tight-lipped about most of the details of the 2015 series, we did manage to eke out a few morsels.

"It's very early in the process," said Hurd over the phone, "But we realized it was likely to leak the minute we started initial discussions... And that's why the announcement was made."

Though they don't have a concept — "That's still being batted around," Hurd said when asked directly about the idea for the show — it won't be an anthology. We brought up the idea in reference to the webisodes that launch before each season of the show. Given the production team has already rolled out three of these web series to much success, it seems like a natural progression. But sadly, it's not meant to be — ironically, because of the success of the webisodes:

"I do think the webisodes serve that purpose," Hurd said, referring to the anthology/flashback format. "Every year, they explicate a bit of backstory that fits in a character or theme you've seen in the series. That's what I think is so fantastic about them. They're expanding the world and the mythology of The Walking Dead."

With two years to go until the debut of the new show, it's going to be a long wait for more info... But to help tide you over, head back to MTV News next week for an extended chat with Hurd about everything you can look forward to in "The Walking Dead" season 4, including a surprising reveal about fan-favorite Daryl.

"The Walking Dead" premieres on AMC on October 13 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
