Over the past decade, Justin Timberlake has brought SexyBack and made you put on your best Suit & Tie (when he wasn’t acting or investing, of course) and now, he’s making his triumphant return to the MTV Video Music Awards, for an unforgettable performance … and a piece of history.
Not only will JT once again grace the VMA stage, but, in recognition of his remarkable string of music videos — from the dark “Cry Me A River” and the futuristic “Rock Your Body” to recent work like the stylish “Suit & Tie” and the haunting “Mirrors” — he’ll also receive the coveted Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, joining a prestigious list of past recipients that includes the King of Pop himself, not to mention Madonna, R.E.M. and the Beastie Boys.
Both as a member of ‘NSync and a solo artist, Timberlake has won an astounding 14 VMAs, a number that puts him second to only Madonna in total wins, and he’ll be looking to add to that total at the 2013 show: He’s up for six Moonmen … tied with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis for the most of any artist.
In addition to all those wins, he’s also established his VMA legacy with a series of memorable performances, including sharing the stage with the King of Pop in 2001, teaming up with Clipse in ’02 for “Like I Love You,” and his cool-y confident “SexyBack/My Love” medley in ’06. And given a history like that, well, we can’t wait to see what he does at this year’s show.
JT is just the latest superstar confirmed to appear at the 2013 VMAs, joining a list that already includes Lady Gaga , Kanye West , Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus . Additional performers and presenters will be announced in the coming weeks.
The 2013 MTV Video Music Awards air live on Sunday, August 25 at 9 p.m. ET/PT from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn!
