Brazilian Rapper MC Daleste Killed Onstage

MC shot during a show on Saturday night outside Sao Paulo.

Brazilian rapper MC Daleste (born Daniel Pellegrine) was shot and killed on Saturday night while performing in Campinas. A graphic video of the incident (warning disturbing images), in which Pellegrine can be seen performing and then dropping to the stage suddenly, was posted online and had been viewed nearly four million times at press time.

It appears that Pellegrine was struck in the stomach by a bullet (possibly two) from an unknown assailant and those onstage with him initially look confused before coming to his aide. It is unclear from the video which direction the shot came from and police are reportedly treating the incident as a murder, though Daleste did not appear to have any known rivals.

According to Brazilian media reports, Pellegrine, 20, was performing at a public housing project in the San Martin neighborhood outside of Sao Paulo during the incident and was taken to a nearby hospital where he died a short time later. No suspects had been arrested in the shooting at press time.

Nearly 100,000 fans have liked a memorial Facebook page, with many leaving emotional tributes to the fallen funk star.

“Another Warrior, another master of ceremonies of the Funk leaves off before the hour,” read the translation of a comment from one of Daleste’s fellow Funk purveyors on Facebook. “Descends the stage without saying goodbye. Victim of intolerance! A great loss to our family of Funk!”

The up-and-coming MC will reportedly be buried on Monday at Vila Formosa, Latin America’s largest cemetery.
