Fans didn't just ask for a "Veronica Mars" movie, they actively supported one, contributing more than $5 million to its budget via Kickstarter. On Tuesday (June 18), those fans got their first glimpse at the fruit of their labor with new pics from the set.
Kristen Bell is seen at the wheel of a convertible, which sits parked in front of 09ER. The movie's Instagram photo shows a close-up of 09ER, which is described as "Neptune's Hottest Nightclub." Bell looks up attentively with an innocent expression, as if taking direction from creator Rob Thomas.
Meanwhile, Bell tweeted a photo of herself holding what appears to be a copy of the script for the movie, even as the production's official Instagram account posted a photo of a clapper board. The caption that accompanied the photo read, "Annnnnnnnd.... ACTION. @TheVeronicaMarsMovie has now started shooting!"
Thomas wrote a script for a film that continued the series after its cancellation in 2007. The project gestated for several years as Warner Bros. declined to finance a film version of the show, but March's Kickstarter campaign to finance a film took in a record-breaking $2 million in a shorter amount of time (one day) than any campaign previously initiated via the fund-raising site. Bell and Jason Dohring were among the first to return for the film, but they were soon joined by Enrico Colantoni, Percy Daggs III, Chris Lowell, Francis Capra, Sam Huntington, Amanda Noret and Tina Majorino among others.
Warner Bros. now intends to distribute the film and the production has a projected early 2014 release date.
