The-Dream is generous with his gift. When the Atlanta-based singer/songwriter isn’t working on his solo material, he’s writing hits for the biggest artists in the game. Now that he is set to drop his IV Play album on May 28, his musical buddies are ready to return the favor.
The “Falsetto” singer revealed that Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland and Big Sean will all contribute to his upcoming album when he appeared on BET’s “106 & Park” on Tuesday. “I don’t really bow down to the pressure of what people want you to do or go and get the next person that’s hot. If they’re on my record it’s because I believe in them and have a certain type of love for them,” he said before he premiered the music video for “Slow it Down” featuring Fabolous.
The IV Play lead single is a sonic departure from many of today’s high-energy dance records. Rather than well-choreographed steps in the video, The-Dream slow grinds with his girl in a 1950s-themed party that is split along racial lines. There is one portion of the soirée where white guests sit and sip champagne in a sophisticated setting, and then there is Dream’s side where guests are slow dancing and getting loose. Once woman decides to cross over to Dream’s party. The multiplatinum singer finds himself at odds with a guy who challenges him to a good old fashioned drag race.
It is unclear who wins, but at the end of the video, The-Dream leaves us with a written message. “I thought music was to be the only place where colors didn’t matter. I was wrong,” reads the closing passage.
Back in February, The-Dream came up to “RapFix Live” to dish on his new album and the title track, which he believes is the best song he’s ever recorded. “It’s about foreplay. I can’t even give it to you. I can’t even say it. It wouldn’t be justice if I told you; you got to hear it,” he said. “It’s really good. You have to trust me on this.”
