They stopped being polite, started getting real … and posed for headshots?
Over the course of 27 seasons, MTV’s reality-show juggernaut “The Real World,” has introduced viewers to a colorful cast of characters, all picked to live in a house and have their lives taped. And 21 years after the New York original, the series is headed to Portland, Oregon, to meet eight fresh faces during an all-new season premiering Wednesday at 10 p.m. on MTV. (Fans can also reminisce over seasons past thanks to a “RetroMTV: Real World” marathon starting Friday at 8 p.m.)
For some “Real World” alumni, a few months in front of the camera only whets their appetite. To wit, many a housemate has parlayed time on the small-screen series into a silver-screen stint. Let’s take a look at five favorites who’ve done just that.
Filmography: The Australian model/actress was the first “Real Worlder”-er to breakout on the big screen. Following her time in the house, Barrett attended the British American Drama Academy in Oxford, later making her film debut in 1997’s “Campfire Tales.” She’s since appeared in “Ladder 49,” “Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason,” “New York, I Love You” and “Poseidon.” Fun fact: She’s married to a fellow actor, “Suits” star Gabriel Macht.
Filmography: The wild child son of a minister, Holmes began dabbling in acting not long after his season wrapped, landing a role in the TV movie “Love Song.” A number of television and movie roles followed, most notably the 2002 Ryan Reynolds movie “Van Wilder” (we’ll never look at eclairs the same way) and the 2004 Katie Holmes film “First Daughter.” Oh, and lest we forget, he was also an intern with Chandler Bing.
Mike “The Miz” Mizanin
Season: Back to New York
Filmography: A pro-wrestler, The Miz can be found on the small screen body-slamming his opponents in the ring, but the former housemate did film a small cameo for the 2012 Will Ferrell movie “The Campaign.” Unfortunately, the scene ended up on the cutting room floor, but you can still see Mizanin in the background as an extra.
Season: Las Vegas
Filmography: The party girl’s been a mainstay in the world of reality TV since she vacated the Palms in the early aughts, but she’s found time along the way to shoot a few flicks including “The Hillz,” “33 Griffin Lane” and “Ninja Cheerleaders.”
Season: San Diego
Filmography: Arguably the most successful of the “Real World” alumni working in film, Chung made her film debut as a Hooters Girl in 2007’s “I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry,” going on to rack up a resume that includes roles in “Sucker Punch,” “The Hangover Part II” and “The Man With the Iron Firsts” (not to mention a slew of TV guest appearances). She can be seen next in “7500,” “The Hangover Part III” and “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For.”
