The 16-year-old took the stage at MTV's Artist to Watch showcase shortly after 8 p.m., where he was greeted by adoring fans, all chanting his name. Sporting a black beanie, leopard-print tee and red high-tops, Mahone kicked off the set with his hit single "Say Somethin'."
"What's up, New York?" Mahone asked the audience before launching into his next song. "You guys ready to have fun?"
Mahone then delivered on his promise, working the stage with fan favorites such as "Shawty, Shawty" and "11:11."
But before finishing his show with his most recent single "Say You're Just a Friend," the Internet sensation returned to his roots, performing what gained him popularity in the beginning: cover songs. Mahone traded in his DJ and backup dancers, whom he'd been rocking with until this point, for a stool and acoustic guitar. He then treated fans to Edwin McCain's "I'll Be" and Mario's "Let Me Love You," dedicating both to the fans, saying, "There are so many beautiful girls here tonight."
As Mahone said goodnight, he collected a few of the gifts fans littered the stage with, including everything from stuffed animals to Skittles. (Both bras that were thrown at the singer were returned to the audience.)
And while none of these presents were left by concert-goer Megan McHale, Mahone gave something to the 18-year-old that she'll never forget. "I want to throw up, I'm so excited," she screamed after Mahone grabbed her cellphone during his performance and snapped a selfie. "I'm speechless."
19-year-old Ashley Filipe agreed that being in Mahone's presence also made her nauseous — in a good way, of course. "He touched my hand five times," she blurted out. "I was going to pass out. To be honest, I was shaking."
Anyone who missed the concert can catch Mahone on select dates of Taylor Swift's Red Tour this summer.
