It’s been a rough week for Lil Wayne and the Cash Money camp, but with Weezy still in the hospital , his YMCMB team manages to look on the bright side of life. On Sunday, Young Money president and Wayne’s close friend Mack Maine premiered the music video for his single “Celebrate” on MTV2, a clip that features the multiplatinum rap icon in positive spirits.
The track, which also features Talib Kweli, is uplifting and motivational in its message. The Brooklyn MC raps about a friend who was just released from prison, while Mack Maine eulogizes family members that he’s lost along the way. On the song’s hook, Weezy gives listeners a reason to smile when he sings “Pop a bottle and celebrate, we made it to a new day” with his gospel-tinged vocals.
During his verse, Weezy sits in a dark room as sunlight creeps in, spreading the word of his higher power. “I know the ocean runs dry and the sky get dark and you don’t see what he’s trying to show ya/ And I know the wall may seem tall, but if we help each other I guarantee we’ll get over,” he raps before ending his 16 bars with the words: “Love, live life.”
At the close of “Celebrate,” there is a dedication to the victims of the December 14 Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. The video closes with a message that reads: “Sandy Hook: 26 Angels, We Love You.”
The video was clearly filmed some time ago when Wayne was in better health, but its release comes as he lies in the hospital after suffering from multiple seizures and having his stomach pumped because doctors reportedly found high amounts of codeine in his system. While TMZ reported that Wayne was in critical condition and was “being prepared for his last rites” on Friday, Mack hopped on Twitter to refute the severity of his friend’s condition. There was even a tweet from Wayne’s verified account which read: “I’m good everybody. Thx for the prayers and love.” Birdman, who also appeared in the “Celebrate” video, visited Wayne in the hospital along with Drake and other friends.
Wayne’s current condition is still unclear, but on Monday (March 18) TMZ reported that that he is still in the ICU and is being closely monitored by doctors at Cedars-Sinai hospital in Los Angeles.
