When Beyoncé gifted her Bey Hive with a brand-new track on Sunday, she also asserted her status as the girl who runs the world.
“Bow Down/I Been On,” released on her blog, features Beyoncé experimenting with her vocal sound by implementing the chopped-and-screwed style. It’s her aggressive, in-your-face approach that has some fans in love and others still undecided. While some music lovers still needed a few more listens before deciding if they were on board with the Houston native’s new sound, others liked her harder approach.
One MTV News reader, Devon, declared, “queen b is snatching wigs…..this is a warning shot…..can’t wait for the new album.”
Beyoncé proves that motherhood hasn’t softened her at all and even takes shots at any potential competition. In a single track, she shows off her ability to rap-sing and belt out in soprano. “Can we just talk about how Beyoncé sang opera & rapped in one song?” @iDrewIvy noted.
@KINGBeysus added, “but tell me how @Beyonce bout to win Best Rap Song at the Grammys next year…. she ain’t playing with males OR females.”
@tyleroakley heard the track’s message loud and clear, writing, “Just heard Beyoncé’s new song. I feel so bad for every other artist in the game. There is no competition. She reigns supreme.”
There may be some shots directed at her competition, but some fans believe the song serves mostly as a reminder that Beyoncé is back and better than ever. ” ‘Bow Down’ is doing it’s job as a promo song. It’s getting Beyonce’s name buzzing, getting haters mad, & fans excited!” @BeyonceRoundIV wrote, while @TheBeyHive_UK wrote, ” ‘Bow Down’ isn’t a single, it’s an announcement to the world. @Beyonce is back. The QUEEN is back. #BowDown.”
“Beyoncé is at a point in her career where she no longer has to be censored and robotic. She’s earned that,” @callmedollar noted. “Let her be great!”
“Beyoncé could have chewed on a pen cap for 17 minutes straight on that song and it would have became the soundtrack to my life,” @SoLyrical commented. @BeninCitizen added, “Beyonce is somewhere warm, eating peeled grapes, thinking, ‘Yeah, send that one. That’ll get the gremlins twisting. Heeheehee!’ *post*”
Fans got a taste of the same operatic elements during the commercial for her tour, billed the Mrs. Carter Show . “Bow Down/I Been On,” isn’t mentioned on the previously leaked track list for the 2013 album release, further adding to the mystery of this release.
There has been no confirmed release date for the album, which includes production from Ne-Yo, Hit-Boy and The-Dream. But, there are only a few short weeks until she hits the road for her tour, which starts April 15 in Belgrade, Serbia.
