Even in a galaxy far, far away, when it rains, it pours.
Hot off the heels of Bob Iger revealing to CNBC that stand-alone “Star Wars” spin-offs were in development at Lucasfilm and rumors of a Yoda movie in particular, Entertainment Weekly’s Anthony Breznican is reporting that two of those character-based projects will be a Boba Fett film and one following a young Han Solo.
While sources close to the projects claimed that these two projects were the “direction the development was taking,” both are still in their infancy and could change in the future. Breznican was also quick to make clear that talk of Boba Fett and Han Solo movies in no way negates other reported spin-off projects, including a potential Yoda movie.
On Tuesday, Disney CEO confirmed that stand-alone “Star Wars” movies based on the already established characters in the universe were also in development, alongside a new trilogy, the first installment of which will be directed by J.J. Abrams.
As a long-standing cult favorite, the notorious bounty hunter Boba Fett is often cited as a supporting character worthy of a spin-off. His original creator, “Captain America: The First Avenger” director Joe Johnston, has very publicly lobbied for a spin-off, and it looks like he may be getting his wish. According to the EW report, the Fett movie would take in between two installments of the original trilogy, before Fett’s unceremonious death in “Return of the Jedi.”
A potential Han Solo movie would take place between the original and prequel trilogies, following the early adventures of the young smuggler. EW claims that there’s potential for Harrison Ford to appear at his current age as a framing device. When MTV News spoke with Robert Rodriguez last month at Sundance, he specifically mentioned a Han Solo movie as being the only “Star Wars” film he would be interested in directing.
Moving the action closer to the timeline of the original trilogy also allows for other classic characters, like Darth Vader, Jabba the Hutt and Lando Calrissian to make appearances.
