Not every pop star gets hip-hop props, but ever since his ’NSYNC days, Justin Timberlake has been kicking it with rappers and making some pretty memorable tunes along the way.
It should come as no surprise that JT hooked up with Jay-Z on his new “Suit & Tie” single, adding to his notable list of rap collaborators, including Nelly, T.I., Timbaland and 50 Cent.
Still, things have changed in the seven years since Justin released his last album, so to help Timberlake out, MTV News came up with a short list of the perfect rap features for Justin’s upcoming 20/20 Experience:
Deuce knows a little something about making a musical comeback. There was a large gap between his 2007 hit “Duffle Bag Boy” with Playaz Circle and his 2012 solo debut, Based on a T.R.U. Story. On “My Love” with T.I., Justin showed he could mesh well with an ATL trap star, so a link-up with 2 Chainz seems right up his alley.
Though he is young, A$AP Rocky proved his pop prowess by collaborating with Rihanna on the “Cockiness” remix and on the 2012 VMA stage. Couple that with Rock’s Harlem swag, and JT can craft a pretty wide-reaching single.
With Drake, you get more than 16 rap bars. The Young Money hitmaker can help JT not just with the rhymes, but he can also contribute to the melody, like he did on Rihanna’s “What’s My Name” or more subtly on Alicia Keys’ “Un-Thinkable (I’m Ready).” The ladies will love it.
JT doesn’t treat his music as disposable art; instead, he waited for the inspiration to strike before he got back into the studio for The 20/20 Experience. Though Kanye continually puts out music, he, too, has a reputation for being quite meticulous in the studio. We’re not sure what a track by these two would sound like, but we know it will be fine-tuned right down to the smallest detail.
Justin and the Clipse made quite a splash when the Neptunes paired the two acts for “Like I Love You” from his debut LP, Justified. Now don’t get us wrong: We love Pusha for all of his rap contributions, but if we’re being totally honest, his brother Malice got the best of him on JT’s breakout single. If given another shot, we know Push will shine bright.
