As if George Lucas didn't already have reason to look forward to 2013, thanks to Disney's acquisition of his company Lucasfilm and the welcome announcement of plans for a new "Star Wars" movie, now comes the happy news about his engagement to longtime girlfriend Mellody Hobson.
According to the Huffington Post, Lucas and Hobson have been dating for seven years. The 43-year-old businesswoman is well-known in her own industry and not to be overshadowed by her fiancé's professional success; Hobson is president of the Chicago-based investment management firm, Ariel Investments LLC, and is a regular financial contributor to "Good Morning America."
No word yet on when the couple plan to wed. At press time, MTV News had not heard back from Lucas' camp for comment. This will be the second marriage for Lucas, who was previously married to Marcia Lucas from 1969 to 1983, and the first for Hobson.
In addition to the excitement surrounding the new "Star Wars" movies and the recent engagement, Lucas also donated all of the money he made from the sale of LucasFilm to a charitable foundation that will focus on educational issues — all $4 billion of it.
"For 41 years, the majority of my time and money has been put into the company," Lucas told The Hollywood Reporter at the time of his donation. "As I start a new chapter in my life, it is gratifying that I have the opportunity to devote more time and resources to philanthropy."
His recent charitable donation is the latest in a long history of donating large sums of money to various organizations, like a $175 million donation to his alma mater University of Southern California in 2006 and support for the Film Foundation, Stand Up to Cancer and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
