Alicia Keys And Her Hair Are Reborn In ‘Brand New Me’ Video

Keys show she's 'not who I was before' in the clip for her latest single off her fifth album Girl on Fire.

Alicia Keys isn’t one to shy away from emotions in her raw and soul-baring tracks, but rarely do we see the R&B songstress get emotional, until now.

In her latest music video for “Brand New Me,” released Tuesday, Keys takes fans on an emotional journey of progression and reinvention. Keys, who teamed up Diane Martel, who directed her video for “Like You’ll Never See Me Again,” kicks off the video sitting in front of a piano at a video shoot, a bit melancholy. The director approaches her and touches her massive mane of curls, which he says “look nice,” but she pulls away.

The powerful ballad begins as Keys plays a few notes on the piano before deciding to embark throughout the set, which proves to be a journey of self-discovery.

“It’s been a while, I’m not who I was before/ You look surprised, your words don’t burn me anymore/ Been meaning to tell you, but I guess it’s clear to see/Don’t be mad, it’s just the brand new kind of me,” Keys sings on the track.

The video’s climactic scene involves Keys singing to herself in front of a group of mirrors as she finally lets her guard down ripping off her wig to show off her new shorter look, and emerging as a new version of herself. Keys returns to the piano, with a smile on her face, as the power anthem concludes, with a “The journey continues…” title card, letting her fans know this story is just beginning.

“Brand New Me” is the latest single off Keys’ #1 album, Girl on Fire, which had Keys teaming up with some of music’s emerging stars including Frank Ocean and Scottish singer/songwriter Emeli Sande, who co-wrote “Brand New Me.”

“I have to say this was such an exciting time for me. I just found an openness in me that I didn’t have before,” Keys recently told MTV News. “And because of that I was way more excited and ready to collaborate with people that I admire. I really wanted to do true collaborations where two people from two different worlds mixed and what would happen. … There’s so many cool people that we were able to literally collide and the music just went to a level that it wouldn’t have gone if it was just them or just me.”
