Guillermo Del Toro's 'Pacific Rim' Trailer: Watch Now!

Giant robots battle giant monsters in trailer for horror filmmaker's brand new 3-D epic.

Chaos is spreading around the world. Creatures as tall as buildings are invading. And it's all Guillermo del Toro's fault.

The "Hellboy" and "Pan's Labyrinth" filmmaker returns to the director's chair for the first time since 2008 with next summer's "Pacific Rim," an all-new concept taking place in a world overrun by giant monsters called Kaiju. The only way to beat these creatures from the ocean depths is an army of man-made robot giants called Jaegers. In other words, "Pacific Rim" is a giant slug-fest between beasts and bots, with some "Sons of Anarchy" and "The Wire" flavor sprinkled into the mix — all in del Toro's capable hands. What more could you ask for?

If you're still not sold on the concept, the brand new "Pacific Rim" trailer should do the trick. It begins with a world swept in chaos, with air-raid sirens blaring as Kaiju make themselves known. We hear the voice of Jaeger pilot Raleigh Antrobus, played by actor Charlie Hunnam, best known for his work as Jax Teller on FX's "Sons of Anarchy."

"We always thought alien life would come from the stars," he muses. "But it came from deep beneath the sea — a portal between dimensions in the Pacific Ocean."

A giant monster emerges, crushing a bridge filled with people and cars, all thrown into panic. Raleigh continues: "Something out there had discovered us. They counted on humans to hide, to give up, to fail ... but they never considered our ability to stand, to endure. That we would rise to the challenge."

With that, we get out first taste of the Jaegers, impossibly huge mechanical monsters built to destroy mankind's otherworldly nemeses. In order to operate the walking weapon, two pilots connect with a neural bridge that responds to their movements and commands. If a Jaeger punches a Kaiju in the kisser, it's because a pilot threw the punch him or herself. If it steps forward, it's just following the pilots' own footwork. That brings us to Jaeger-on-Kaiju battle for the remainder of the "Pacific Rim" trailer, with the words of military leader Stacker Pentecost (played by "The Wire" veteran Idris Elba) thrown in for good measure.

"Today, at the edge of our hope, at the end of our time, we have chosen to believe in each other," Pentecost barks, delivering a speech that would make Bill Pullman-circa-"Independence Day" blush. "Today, we face the monsters that are at our door. Today, we are canceling the apocalypse!"

As long as no one cancels "Pacific Rim," we're good. The movie lands on July 12, 2013.
