"The stigma that I get — even with this album, the vibe of it and how mellow it is — you automatically say, 'Oh, it's a stoner album,' just because I smoke," the Pittsburgh rapper told MTV News on Tuesday (December 4) promoting the just-released LP at SiriusXM Radio. "Instead of saying it's a mood album or something that you really have to listen to or pay attention to, people automatically say it's a stoner album."
Granted, Khalifa smokes a ton of weed and raps about his affinity for cannabis at length, but with O.N.I.F.C., his aim was to go beyond the basic stereotypes and bring listeners into his world on songs like "Medicated," on which he rhymes about the necessary lessons he learned growing up in the rugged Hazelwood section of Pittsburgh.
On "Got Everything," the soon-to-be married rap star finds inspiration in his fiancée Amber Rose, and on the ID Labs-produced "Time," Wiz ponders his place as the head of his real-life family as well as his Taylor Gang crew.
"When you break it down and you listen to the lyrics and all the words, you really find out how deep I'm going in and how lyrical I'm actually being and how literal I'm being by putting my life into every bar," he said before exercising some optimism. "I think it'll take time and people will break it down and eventually find the real meaning."
Still, to simply have his catalog classified as weed music does get to be a bit much even for Wiz, who usually brushes things off of his lanky shoulders. When times do get tough, it's the Taylors, his beloved fans, who help ease the load.
"I can't say I don't get frustrated sometimes, but what helps my frustration is when I see people tweet out certain lines that I know mean a lot to me," he said. "I'm like, 'Oh, all right, this person actually got it.' "
