Justin Bieber may have felt his decision to wear overalls and a backward baseball cap when meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper was worthy of a “LOL,” but after the look was dubbed “white trash” by several websites, the singer stood by his outfit choice.
Bieber met with Prime Minster Harper on Friday, when he was awarded the Diamond Jubilee Medal before his show in Ottawa, according to the Edmonton Sun. The award is given to Canadians who have made a significant contribution to their homeland.
Shortly after Bieber posted a photo of himself with the PM, he was criticized online and more specifically in a Daily Mail article asking, “Would a suit hurt, Justin?”
The singer quickly posted a statement about his choice of wardrobe on Instagram in response to the write-up. “The pic of me and the Prime Minister was taken in a room in the arena where i was performing at that day. I walked straight from my meet and greet to him, if you ‘Hayley’ [the name of the Daily Mail reporter] expect me to have a change of clothes let [alone] a suit at that specific time that’s crazy,” he wrote on Sunday. “It wasn’t like it was like I was going into his environment we were at a hockey arena. Wow am i ever white trash hayley peterson lol.”
The look had already been defended by Harper, who laughed off his decision to wear overalls even before the Daily Mail article had been published on November 25. On Saturday, he joked on Twitter, “In fairness to @justinbieber, I told him I would be wearing my overalls too. #cdnpoli #beliebers.”
Bieber was still in Canada on Sunday when he performed at the 100th Grey Cup at the Rogers Centre when the Toronto Argonauts went up against the Calgary Stampeders, and according to reports, the reception to the singer was less than warm.
According to the Calgary Herald, the crowd booed when his face appeared on the Jumbotron in the venue. They also booed when the host said his name and later on when he took the stage and performed “Boyfriend” and “Beauty and a Beat.” The newspaper reports that the singer seemed unfazed by their reception of him and told the crowd, “Thank you so much, Canada. I love you.”
Afterward, Bieber took to Twitter to share how excited he was to play the football game’s halftime show, which also featured Carly Rae Jepsen. He wrote, “honored to perform for my country. #ProudCanadian . Good luck in the second half. Thanks.” For those wondering, the Toronto Argonauts won the game.
