Jeremy Renner can kick your ass. But can he make you laugh? He’ll certainly try on Saturday night (November 17), when he steps on stage as the latest host of “Saturday Night Live.”
“It’s a huge honor and a ton of fun,” Renner told MTV News on the “SNL” set this week. “There’s loads of unknowns and I think that’s scary for everybody — what we’re ignorant to, and what we don’t know. [The show] moves very fast on top of that. That’s something I’m not used to, but I’m trusting that I have tremendous people around me. I figure I can’t lose.”
The odds of winning are certainly in Renner’s favor, given all of his accomplishments in the past few years: Oscar nominations for “The Hurt Locker” and “The Town,” a big role in the third highest-grossing movie of all time , and a spy franchise all his own in “The Bourne Legacy.” But all of those action-packed projects are very different from what Renner faces in his “SNL” debut — and that’s exactly what appeals to him about the opportunity.
“It’s all a challenge, and that’s what makes it fun,” he said. “You want to be challenged and surprised by anything and everything you do, and I certainly am here, every minute of this show and this experience. I can’t wait to see what happens.”
Besides, it’s likely that Renner’s past experiences won’t be too far behind him when he takes the “SNL” stage. Given his huge year and his widely-seen role as the eagle-eyed Hawkeye in “The Avengers,” it’s hard to imagine the comedy show resisting a sketch featuring Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
“Perhaps, perhaps not,” Renner grinned and teased when asked if Hawkeye and his superhero pals would appear on “SNL” this week. “I’m not sure what I’ll be doing for sure, but… we’ll see.”
