NEW YORK — They say charity begins at home, but on Friday night (November 9), Rihanna took her giving spirit to the club, hosting a listening party with a cause. Bloggers, industry types and a fleet of her Rihanna Navy turned up as requested bearing badly needed items for victims of Hurricane Sandy.
So in addition to studded clutches and after-work bags, guests turned up to Jay-Z's 40/40 with household cleaning products, blankets and baby essentials, a haul that was collected by the New York Daily News' relief effort. In return for the generosity, we were treated to a full preview of Rih's upcoming seventh album, Unapologetic, set for a November 19 release.
A day after the release of the eye-catching video for lead single "Diamonds," it was clear that the shimmering track hadn't been a sign of things to come, but rather just one piece of a sonically varied puzzle. Whether it's the strip-club swag of "Pour It Up," the hypnotic sway of the Eminem-featuring "Numb" or the R&B vibe that she brings to "Loveeeeeee Song" (with help from Future) no two tracks are alike. (Be sure to hit MTV News on Monday morning, when our own James Montgomery will have a full review.)

Of course, what her faithful were hoping for was a glimpse of the superstar. And not long after the DJ announced he was running the album back from the top, Rihanna turned up in an upper-level banquette smiling at the scene, eliciting screams from the crowd who'd been patient enough to wait her out. Phresh in a black blouse and matching pants and sporting her "Diamonds" 'do, she waved, posed for pictures with friends and danced along to her disc.
The pop princess and her fans joined for a good night and a good cause.
