“Twilight” lore is littered with the tales of actors and actress who were this close to portraying beloved characters Bella, Edward or Jacob. But few casting near-misses are as ironic as “Teen Wolf” star Tyler Posey’s, considering he landed another lycanthrope role a few short years later on the MTV series. Posey recalls losing out plum part to Taylor Lautner in a new episode of “This Is How I Made It,” airing Saturday, November 10, at 12/11 C.
“At an early age, I was always dealing with my ethnicity in roles. My mom is Mexican, which is why I’m always playing — not stereotypical — but I’m playing ethnic roles,” Posey explained. “Most of my roles have all been Hispanic roles, from the TV show ’Doc,’ to ’Maid in Manhattan.’ I played a Colombian kid in ’Collateral Damage.’ I got turned down a lot, one out of maybe every 3,000 auditions I book, which is an intense ratio. I would see this kid at auditions all the time, and I knew him. We had a very similar career, and we grew up in the same town, and eventually we became friends and started talking because I saw him at literally every audition, and it was Taylor Lautner.”
Both actors tested opposite leading lady Kristen Stewart, but it was Lautner who landed the role — something Posey didn’t learn until months later.
“I was very excited because I was a fan of [Stewart’s],” he said. “I saw Taylor Lautner at all of these auditions, and I knew he was auditioning for ’Twilight’ also. I remember I saw him at an audition a few months after, and I was like, ’Hey man, what have you been up to?’ And he was like, ’I was filming “Twilight.”’ That’s when I found out I didn’t get the part.”
Four blockbuster films later, Posey harbors no ill-will towards his childhood friend.
“When it comes to acting, you’re going to get turned down a lot. You can’t over think it. When I don’t get the part, I never dwell too much on it,” he said.
“So, yeah, I auditioned for ’Twilight,’ Jacob Black. Taylor Lautner beat me. Congratulations, dude. That’s a sick role. That’s awesome. I hate you,” he added with a laugh.
Tune into MTV on Saturday, November 10 at 12 p.m. ET, for a brand-new episode of “This Is How I Made It,” featuring Tyler Posey and Meek Mill.
