Lupe Fiasco’s Anti-Voting Stance Ignites Heated Twitter Debate

'obama ain't gone lose cuz of me and my raps,' Lupe Fiasco tweeted in a debate with D.L. Hughley and others.

Lupe Fiasco has long questioned America’s political system. On his debut album in 2006, the Chicago MC looked critically at this country’s foreign policy on “American Terrorist,” and on 2011′s “Words I Never Said,” criticized President Barack Obama and the spit: “That’s why I didn’t vote for him, next one either.”

In fact, Fiasco has long said he doesn’t believe in the U.S. voting system and will not be participating in the upcoming presidential election. Now that November 6 is fast approaching, Lupe’s disenfranchisement with the voting system has drawn furor from comedian and political commentator D.L. Hughley and journalist Roland S. Martin.

“Young black men are going to listen to him, and they are the ones who have decisions made for them, decisions that they are not even involved in, which is silly to me,” Hughley said during a recent radio interview with Hartford, Connecticut’s Hot 93.7. “There are more black men in prison then there were ever slaves. And it’s silly to me that people don’t want to have a hand in their future.”

Martin then took to Twitter to weigh in. “I just read some comments about voting and @lupefiasco that are some of the most ignorant, false stuff someone can say,” he wrote on Wednesday before he began to stress the importance of voting by throwing out stats in succession.

It didn’t take long for the rapper, who is dropping his Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album, Pt. 1 LP on September 25, to chime in. “Just lettin you ‘Lupe Dumb Cuz He Don’t Vote’ crowd know that if y’all don’t #LeeMeAlone my n—as #YallGoneGetThisWork #FL2Sept25,” he tweeted in response. “Yo @rolandsmartin obama ain’t gone lose cuz of me and my raps dawg…Now I’m begging you bruh bruh.”

The back-and-forth lasted for several hours Wednesday night, never coming to a resolve. “For a system and a government that kills and steals all over the f—ing world with impunity and heartlessness for sake of what,” Lupe wrote. “Not even in the name of GOD, in the name of corporate profit!! i aint voting 4 dat sh–. U can unfollow if u want but #YallGoneGetThisWork.”

How should Lupe Fiasco express his views on the U.S. voting system? Sound off in the comments!
