After nearly nine months of waiting, a new trailer for “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” debuted online Wednesday (September 19), taking a more comical and story-heavy approach than the teaser. The preview features goblins, wizards, trolls and our longest look yet at the famous “Riddles in the Dark” sequence.
We’ve stopped watching the trailer on repeat long enough to break down what’s new in the preview and what makes December seem so far away.
Radagast the Brown
Sure, you’ve heard of Gandalf the Grey and Saruman the White, but have you heard of Radagast the Brown? Radagast is a wizard like Gandalf and shows up briefly in the trailer to hint at a “dark power” that has returned to Middle-earth. This is just the beginning of a story line that will play an important role in the later installments of the “Hobbit” trilogy. Though Radagast doesn’t appear in the original novel, he plays a key role in a parallel story taken from the Appendix of “Lord of the Rings,” which has Gandalf, Saruman and Galadriel facing a mysterious dark force.
Riddles in the Dark
Now, that’s a familiar face. Perhaps the most famous scene in “The Hobbit,” the “Riddles in the Dark” chapter, marks the first appearance of the ring-obsessed creature known as Gollum. In the trailer, Bilbo and Gollum discuss the terms of their game of wits. “If Baggins loses, we eats it whole,” Gollum casually suggests. The line hits the right note thanks to the magic of Andy Serkis’ motion-capture performance, and it falls in line with the lighter, more comedic tone of “The Hobbit,” compared to the brooding of “Lord of the Rings.”
In addition to having to deal with dragons, trolls and cave-dwelling hobbit eaters, Bilbo and company have gigantic wolves to fend off. The wargs, as they’re known in Middle-earth, have been known to team up with some of the world’s nastiest creatures, and in “The Hobbit,” they’ll play a big role in the movie’s final action sequence. We only get a glimpse of them here, but expect to see more from the Wargs this December.
While the name pretty much says it all, these enormous moving rock formations only got a passing reference in novel, but from the trailer, it looks like they’ll be at the center of a mountain-top action sequence.
The most action-packed sequences of the trailer feature the goblins and their underground fortress. None of the promo material has given us a good look at the nasty creatures, but here we see Bilbo battling one, the dwarves running away from others, and if we’re not mistaken, that could very well be the goblin king falling on the dwarves at the end of the trailer.
