Among the countless exciting moments on the red carpet of the 2012 Video Music Awards was, of course, the highly anticipated announcement of MTV's new "House of Style" hosts, supermodels Karlie Kloss and Joan Smalls.
If you're a New York native, you may recognize Joan from her enormous Calvin Klein billboards downtown, and you may have heard of Karlie if you're the proud owner of the Marc Jacobs purse named and inspired by the coltish St. Louis beauty. Both have graced the covers and pages of fashion magazines from Vogue to W and have walked miles of catwalk in fashion shows the world over for design houses from Chanel to Lanvin.
The two lovely ladies fill the shoes of such industry stalwarts as Cindy Crawford, Rebecca Romijn, Shalom Harlow and Amber Valletta for the show that chronicled the fashion industry during the supermodel heyday of the '90s. The original show, which ran from 1989 to 1999, gave viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the fashion industry by examining the connection between fashion and music, giving fans unprecedented access to models and designers.
Thursday marked the first time the newly appointed hosts have attended the Video Music Awards, and their enthusiasm was unbridled. Towering over most mere mortals, the girls were a study in contrasts — Joan in a quilted, black leather dress; Karlie in a long-sleeved, stark, white mini — but their chemistry was undeniable.
