Shaun White Relives 'Bizarre' Backstage Brawl At 2011 VMAs

Snowboarder says a near-throwdown between Will Ferrell and Tyler, the Creator was the 'most insane thing I've ever witnessed.'

Shaun White may have his sights focused on the upcoming 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia, but he's always managed to make time for the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards, even if he's just watching at home. Last year, he teamed up with Miley Cyrus to present the award for Best Rock Video to Foo Fighters, who used the opportunity to defend "real rock" during their acceptance speech.

But it was a fight of an altogether different kind that he remembered most. Namely, the almost-brawl he saw between Will Ferrell and Tyler, the Creator.

During a recent interview with MTV News, the snowboarding star recalled with wonder what went down. He was backstage talking fashion with one of his favorite comedic actors, Jonah Hill. "I was wearing a jacket which he had also purchased, or something," White explained.

Out of nowhere, the Odd Future crew appeared, followed by Ferrell, who was dressed in a red tracksuit. "They were presenting an award with Will Ferrell, [but] I had no idea. He walks in and they just start swearing at him, 'You're gonna die!' Yelling all of this crazy stuff to him. I was so caught off guard."

Frantic thoughts raced through White's mind. "'What is happening?' Are they about to beat up Will Ferrell? What's going on?'"

Next, the "Anchorman" star was right in Tyler the Creator's face, taking things to a new level. "He's like, 'What? You want to have my baby?'"

White was stunned. "I'm just like, 'This is the most insane thing I've ever witnessed!' It was just the most bizarre thing!"

Of course, Ferrell and the Odd Future dudes were just rehearsing for their onstage performance, where a big "fight" would later ensue. "They were practicing their lines. But I had no idea. And I'm sitting there with Jonah, like, 'This is about to go down. Do I call someone? What do I do?' But that was pretty cool."

Even a year later, White still chuckled at Ferrell's line to the 2011 Best New Artist winner. "Who says that in a fight, too, to another guy?"

He considered his own question for a moment. "Will Ferrell."
