Earlier this week, Ellie Goulding and her swirling pop/dance track, "Lights," beat out tracks by EDM superstars Eric Prydz, Porter Robinson, David Guetta, Avicii and Calvin Harris to take home the prize of EDM Gold in the 2012 MTV News Summer Jam Games.
Goulding's dance-floor anthem off her 2010 debut album of the same name has had a slow burn to the top of the EDM heap. After dropping in 2011, it didn't really get its shine on the charts or in the hearts of music lovers everywhere until this year. But the most surprising part about the win wasn't that it took so long for her song to become a go-to jam, but that it's been tossed into the dance-music ring.
"That's funny. Isn't it?" she told MTV News this week from the set of her "Anything Could Happen" music video in Malibu, California. "I feel like that's a bit unfair. I'm not really an EDM artist. I don't know; maybe I am. But that's pretty cool. I feel really happy about that #1 in anything is pretty cool, but, yeah, that's awesome. That's good. Thanks."
The Brit songstress isn't the only performer standing in the winner's circle this summer. Earlier this week, she took home gold along with Pop winner Justin Bieber ("As Long As You Love Me"), Rock champions No Doubt ("Settle Down"), Hip-Hop finalists Usher and Rick Ross ("Lemme See") and R&B conqueror Frank Ocean ("Thinkin' About You").
Not only is the song celebrating victory in the Summer Jam Games, but also another week of chart success. The song currently sits at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, only bested by Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe." It rose three spots from last week when it sat at #5. Billboard reports that if it continues to rise at this rate it could take Jepsen down off her record-making nine-week run at the top of the chart.
