Both women tweeted about the meet-up. “What a refreshing surprise she is!” Oprah wrote about her chat with the VMA-nominated superstar. She then tweeted out a photo of the pair walking together — Oprah in all green, while Rihanna sported an aqua-colored, floral-print, full-length dress.
The excitement for the chat was felt on both ends with Rihanna tweeting, “Look who popped up in my Hometown BARBADOS #topnotch.” She included a photo of the twosome in a car with Rihanna behind the wheel.
This interview marks the first time that Rihanna and Oprah have formally had a sit-down interview. Oprah dedicated an episode of her talk show to domestic violence after the 2009 assault of Rihanna by Chris Brown, but Rihanna did not appear on the show.
Winfrey had a message for young women who find themselves in abusive relationships during that Rihanna-inspired episode. “If you go back with a man who hits you, it’s because you don’t think you’re worthy of being with a man who won’t,” Winfrey said during that show. “I’ve said before, ’Love doesn’t hurt, and if a man hits you once, he will hit you again.’ ”
Rihanna later appeared on Oprah’s show in January 2010, where she performed Bob Marley’s classic “Redemption Song” to benefit the victims of the devastating earthquake in Haiti.
Oprah first announced the Rihanna “Next Chapter” episode in June. The show has already featured insightful chats with the likes of the Kardashians, 50 Cent and Lady Gaga.
A few weeks after her Oprah episode airs, Rihanna will see if she can take home a Moonman at the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards. She’s up for five, including Video of the Year for “We Found Love.”
