The Reaping rolls on as Lionsgate, the studio behind "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," announced Thursday (August 2) that "Sex and the City" actress Lynn Cohen will enter the Quarter Quell as District 4 tribute Mags.
If it's been a while since you've read the second novel in Suzanne Collins' dystopian series, you may need a bit of a refresher as to who this octogenarian is. After all, Mags' casting hasn't been as closely watched or breathlessly speculated over as that of fellow District 4 tribute Finnick Odair. (But, really, who could blame us? The guy is billed as Panem's Sexiest Man Alive! Eat your heart out, Bradley Cooper!)
So with that in mind, here's a rundown of what you need to know about Mags:
Her Backstory: Like all her fellow Quarter Quell tributes, Mags is a victor (an all-star, if you will) from a previous Games. (Which one, we don't know for sure.) And since her time in the arena, she's served as a mentor for District 4's other tributes, including the beloved Finnick.
Her Path to the Quarter Quell: Mags and Katniss share more in common than outsmarting the Capitol: They've both volunteered as tribute. Mags' name wasn't actually drawn for the 75th Hunger Games. Instead, it was that of Finnick's lady love, Annie Cresta, but Mags takes her place — most likely due to Annie's emotional instability.
Her Skills: In her advanced age, Mags isn't exactly the ideal physical specimen. For one, she has a stutter, which Katniss chocks up to an earlier stroke. Then there's her inability to walk quickly, which forces Finnick to carry her at points during the Games. But she does boast a valuable skill picked up from her fishing-rich homeland: making fishhooks out of just about anything.
Spoilers ahead if you haven't read "Catching Fire"!
Her Fate: Mags dies an honorable death during the second day of the Games, sacrificing herself to poisonous fog to save Finnick, Katniss and Peeta.
