‘Total Recall’ Brings Futuristic Action Back Down To Earth

'I liked that it had a really gritty, attached-to-the-earth feel,' Jessica Biel tells MTV News.

When Len Wiseman’s remake of “Total Recall” debuts later this week, the biggest difference between this new version and the Arnold Schwarzenegger/ Paul Verhoeven original may be the nature of the action. Schwarzenegger’s Quaid was all power and muscle, while Colin Farrell‘s is of the quicker, post-Bourne variety.

MTV News caught up with Farrell’s co-star Jessica Biel at San Diego Comic-Con to talk about the nature of the action in the remake.

Despite the sci-fi setting, Biel said the action is much more personal than we’re used to in the genre. “It’s going to be amazing. We have a lot of CG stuff, but it’s really man-to-man, hand-to-hand combat,” she said. “That, I think, is what really brings that real quality, that earthy, grounded sense in this big, heightened, futuristic, sci-fi action movie.”

Biel’s favorite scene is actually a more low-tech one that played a key role in the trailers. After Quaid learns the life he knows isn’t his own, the woman he thought was his wife — played by Wiseman’s wife, Kate Beckinsale — attempts to kill him. “My favorite fight in the whole thing is Kate and Colin right when he realizes who she is,” she said. “That sequence, literally, when I saw it for the first time, I screamed in delight with this one move that she does. It’s so good.”

And even though “Total Recall” takes place in a future with implanted memories, Biel said the movie’s unique approach to action keeps it grounded, unlike some of the other, more high-flying blockbusters that have already debuted this summer. “It’s just fresh. I feel that the action sequences are fresh. The choreography is cool, but no one is flying,” she said. “I sometimes have a hard time connecting to people flying around. There’s a place for that, like ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.’ Cool. That’s not going to work for this movie. I liked that it had a really gritty, attached-to-the-earth feel.”
