Amid much pomp and circumstance — and, we can only assume nearly as much Spandex — the Olympics officially kick off Friday (July 26) in London, with an elaborate Opening Ceremony that will celebrate the spirit of competition and the glory of the host nation (we can’t wait for the Benny Hill tribute). It’s a spectacle four years in the making, and while we’re sure the whole world will be watching, we here in the MTV Newsroom will have our eyes elsewhere … namely, our very own summertime showcase.
That’s right, in honor of the Olympics, we’re launching our first-ever Summer Jam Games, a no-holds-barred battle to determine just who had the hottest song of the summer. Just like in London, we’ve got competitors from all over the globe — the U.S., Canada, Barbados, Sweden, Turkey, wherever David Guetta’s from — and they’ll go head-to-head in their respective genres, with you voting for your favorites in each.
It all kicks off Monday (July 30), when polls open in all five Summer Jam categories (Hip-Hop, Pop, R&B, EDM and Rock) … and all next week, we’ll be bringing you up-to-the-minute analysis on the races for the gold, silver and bronze medals in each genre.
So while the best athletes in the world may be competing in the Olympics, the biggest artists on the planet will do battle in our Summer Games. Will Kanye take home gold in Hip-Hop, or does the summer belong to Rick Ross? Will Carly Rae Jepsen lap the field in Pop, or will Katy Perry reign supreme? Is Frank Ocean or Chris Brown the top dog in R&B? Did Avicii or Porter Robinson dominate EDM? And who’s set the bar highest in Rock: Green Day or No Doubt?
It’ll all be determined Monday, right here on MTV News, when we unveil the full list of artists who will compete in our Summer Jam Games, and kick off voting in each category. Who will stand triumphant at the podium, and who will be left in the dust? It’s up to you to decide … and get ready, because the whole world will certainly be watching!
