‘Dark Knight Rises’: What’s The Future Of Catwoman?

'It would be lovely to see more of her,' Anne Hathaway says.

Few could have predicted back when Anne Hathaway‘s Catwoman costume from “The Dark Knight Rises” first leaked onto the Internet that the then-mocked character would go on to steal the show, but that’s exactly what Selina Kyle did.

Now that Christopher Nolan‘s trip to Gotham has come to a close, fans are predictably clamoring for more, if not from Christian Bale‘s Batman, then from the newly introduced Kyle. But is that something that could actually happen?

Hathaway recently spoke with Digital Spy and said that she would consider revisiting Kyle and her Catwoman alter ego.

“I think it would be lovely to see more of her, but only if it’s with the right people,” Hathaway said. “She lives in this Gotham City, and so it would have to be established by the people who have made this Gotham City. For me, at least.”

For all intents and purposes, that means Christopher Nolan, who has on every possible occasion said that “The Dark Knight Rises” is where this story ends for him. Keeping that in mind, a stand-alone Catwoman movie doesn’t seem likely on the terms that Hathaway has spelled out.

Even if there were a continuation of the Anne Hathaway-Selina Kyle story, the way in which “The Dark Knight Rises” wraps up doesn’t allow for much exploration.

(Spoilers ahead)
As you remember from the end of the film, Alfred travels back to his spot in Italy, which he had previously mentioned to Master Bruce. Having always hoped to see Wayne there with a family, the former butler is delighted to see the old master there with Miss Kyle. The most obvious implication here is that Bruce and Selina are now living abroad, having finally done away with the shadows of their past.

Any Catwoman spin-off occurring after the events of “The Dark Knight Rises” would therefore continue the story of Bruce Wayne, which is exactly what Nolan doesn’t want. Even if Bruce didn’t make an appearance, that says something about what happens in their relationship, which was left vague purposefully.

For now, we’ll just have to enjoy the little Selina Kyle that we have, and try our best to let go of the scars left by Halle Berry.
