Tom Cruise Turns 50 Without Katie Holmes

Actor previously revealed plans to spend his big day with his ex in Iceland.

Tom Cruise turned 50 on Tuesday (July 3), just days after his actress wife, Katie Holmes, [article id="1688799"]filed for divorce[/article]. Currently in Iceland shooting his latest blockbuster, "Oblivion," the A-list actor will be spending his milestone birthday without his wife of five years.

And as his birthday rolls on, [article id="1688887"]more reports[/article] about the end of the couple's relationship are bubbling to the surface. On Monday, Holmes was [article id="1688924"]spotted in New York City[/article] for the first time since the announcement, without her wedding ring.

However, weeks prior to his split from Holmes, Cruise shared with People.com that he had plans to spend his birthday with her. "Iceland is beautiful," Cruise said in the lead-up to his 50th. "We like hiking, and so we'll have some nice hikes and maybe go camping."

Cruise's plans for a romantic birthday make sense given sources' reports that he was "blindsided" by her filing for divorce. TMZ reports that in legal divorce documents, Holmes noted that her relationship with Cruise had been "irretrievably" broken more than six months before she filed. This news comes as she was spotted with Cruise in Iceland only weeks before she filed for divorce.

In the same legal documents, Holmes adds that she and her former husband had been living in New York City for at least two years prior to the split. She is looking to keep divorce proceedings in the Big Apple.

On Monday, Holmes fired her publicist and re-signed with BWR Public Relations, the firm she had been with prior to her relationship with Cruise. Sources tell UsMagazine.com that Holmes is trying to get her career back on track as it had been heavily controlled by Cruise, who wouldn't allow her to do films that included "sexually compromising scenes, largely because the Scientology folks objected."

The sources added that "Katie wants her life back" -- including her career. She will begin work on "Responsible Adults," a film with Chace Crawford, later this year. And it seems that now might be a good time for her to pursue a "Dawson's Creek" reunion. Cruise reportedly advised her not to do it while they were married.

"[Producers] were begging her to sign on for a reunion movie. Tom said, 'Absolutely no way' and thought going backward would be bad," an insider told Us, adding that she "didn't care how 'low-brow' he thinks 'Dawson's Creek' is. She wanted to do the movie and reconnect with her fans. And have fun -- something she rarely does anymore."
