Sure, [article id="1675816"]Skrillex clenched the #1[/article] spot on MTV's Best EDM Artist of 2011 list, but Nick van de Wall, stage name Afrojack is still celebrating.
The DJ/producer had a near-perfect year, and he continues the trend with his latest accolade: a #5 ranking in MTV's top 10.
"Yooooo! I'm amazed MTV voted me #5 Best EDM Artist of 2011," Afrojack told MTV News in a statement. "Super-happy that you guys dig my stuff so much. I'm gonna try and make your radio a little more fresh, and your clubs extra bouncy, and bleepy, in 2012. Thanks for all of [your] support and see you in 2012!!"
Save for mentor David Guetta, Afrojack had more hits on U.S. radio in 2011 than any other artist in electronic dance music. Beyoncé used Afro-beats' "Pon De Floor" (co-produced with Major Lazer's Diplo and Switch) for her hit single "Run the World (Girls)." And Chris Brown added another hit to his catalog in "Look at Me Now" by recruiting Afro and Diplo for the production. Then there was Pitbull's mammoth summer jam "Give Me Everything," a certified multiplatinum single. Afrojack also had his own chart success. His [article id="1646835"]single "Take Over Control"[/article] (with Eva Simons) spent six weeks atop the Billboard Hot Dance Airplay chart.
Coinciding with all of this mainstream success, the bleep-master released an astounding number of solidly EDM singles, including "Replica," "Doing It Right" and "Lionheart." His collaborations with mentee R3hab as well as artists like Nervo, Steve Aoki and Quintino still maintain significant chart positions on Beatport.com.
Afrojack took those releases to the people with festival showings at Ultra Music Festival, Electric Daisy Carnival, Lollapalooza and Coachella. The 24-year-old Dutchman is also up for two more Grammy awards in February.
"What I have been able to accomplish in ten years," Guetta told MTV News last week, "Afrojack has done in two years. He is amazing."
