It's been three years in the making, but fans of Steve Aoki are finally getting to hear the first couple of gems off his upcoming Wonderland album. Following debut single "Earthquakey People," which features Weezer vocalist Rivers Cuomo, the electronic dance music DJ/ producer collaborates with one of the biggest brands in EDM today, or the past decade, for that matter: His latest song, "Tornado," is co-produced by veteran [article id="1672216"]icon Tiësto[/article].
While the two producers may sound completely different in style, their coming together makes sense. Tiësto has had a sonic renaissance through popular partnering with folks [article id="1639542"]like Diplo[/article], Mark Knight, Kaskade, Hardwell and Marcel Woods, to name a few. And Aoki's collabos [article id="1673262"]with Nervo[/article], Afrojack, Laidback Luke, the Bloody Beatroots and more have made him one of the most sought after touring DJs around the world. Importantly for each of their respective fanbases, "Tornado" feels equal parts Tiësto, and Aoki: a calculated result executed by two exceptional beat technicians.
"The record I did with Tiësto is exactly what I expect people would think [of] when you combine my sound and his sound," Aoki told MTV News. "It's really aggressive. It's really hard. It's got really big open, catchy parts that he wrote. It works like magic. It's one of my favorite records to play in my set. It's a f---ing chomping record, but then it has this really big open space."
Tiësto echoed Aoki's pleasure with the song, adding even more context. "I've always been a big fan of Steve Aoki," Tiësto told MTV News. "He has a very energetic sound — sometimes a little too hard for my taste, but I always enjoy listening to him. I love his energy, stage-diving — he's crazy.
"I met him in Las Vegas many times, but the last time I met him in Vegas he was like, 'Let's do a track together,' and I was like, 'Yeah. It's a cool idea,' " Tiësto added. "He sent me that really energetic grinding stuff. And then I put the melody in there. Polished it a little bit. Put some Tiësto flavor on it."
"Tornado" is available for purchase now, and a video will most likely be shot later this year or in early January. Fans should expect great things from Aoki's Wonderland. The album, tentatively slated for a January release, features quite an impressive roster.
"As of now," Aoki revealed, "we have Travis Barker, Tiësto, Wynter Gordon, Blaqstarr, Kay, Rivers Cuomo, Chiddy Bang, Zuper Blahq [will.i.am], LMFAO." Aoki was also tickled to share that members of the Exploited and Die Kreuzen are featured on a track.
