Those behind “Green Lantern” haven’t shied away from admitting that the flick’s first trailer, which underwhelmed many viewers upon its release in November, wasn’t the best introduction to their adaptation of the DC Comics hero.
As Warner Bros. worldwide marketing chief Sue Kroll put it in an interview with the Los Angeles Times, “Part of the reason the response to the first trailer was lukewarm was that the big-scale sequences weren’t ready to show, and we suffered for it. We can’t afford to do that again.”
So the pressure was on as the studio brought “Green Lantern” to Las Vegas for CinemaCon, where they planned to screen about 10 minutes of footage to show fans they have a winner on their hands. But as star Ryan Reynolds put it to MTV News while walking the press line before the screening, although he was frustrated by the marketing plan, he is not at all fearful that the film itself will be a letdown.
“For me, I just want it out there faster than Warner Bros. can unfortunately produce it. If anyone’s rushing it, it’s me,” he told us.
“This movie is a huge project for the studio, it’s a huge project for me, it’s a huge project for everyone involved. There are so many visual-effects shots and so much to do, and it’s just really hard to get ahead of that in terms of a marketing standpoint. That’s no secret. But all that stuff is coming.
“I’m not worried about it,” he added. “We’ve never been worried about it because we saw the early concepts and we saw how well they worked. Unfortunately that was stuff you just can’t release and show to people because it needs to be perfected. I’m not worried at all.”
Then Reynolds and the Con-goers headed inside for the screening. Afterwards, the audience was buzzing: This, finally, was a “Green Lantern” to get excited about, as we told Reynolds later in the day.
“I agree,” he responded. “I feel better. I feel better that you feel better.”
