Lil Wayne works so hard that he hasn’t even had a chance to sit down and listen to the debut albums of his Young Money disciples Drake and Nicki Minaj.
In an interview with href="http://rapfix.mtv.com/2011/03/29/lil-wayne-says-jersey-shore-is-my-favorite-show/">Hot 97′s Angie Martinez on Tuesday, Weezy revealed that although he has heard all of the music from Drake’s Thank Me Later and Minaj’s Pink Friday, he’s been too busy to experience the projects from start to finish.
“I never even heard Drake’s album, I never heard Nicki’s album, I swear to God,” Wayne admitted to Martinez. “I work too hard to. This is what we supposed to do. I’ve heard the songs. I’m always focused on something and it captures my whole attention, I can’t do nothing else.”
In the same interview, the Young Money CEO spoke at length about how despite his own competitive nature, he actually wants Nicki and Drake to outperform him for the benefit of his musical family. According to Wayne, that’s the proper evolution in a hip-hop mogul’s development.
“What people have to understand is and consider is the fact that I didn’t have my team established when I came out saying I’m the best,” Wayne said. “So I had to draw the focus on me. Just like everybody else that did it the proper way. [Jay-Z] came out, he wasn’t telling us about nobody else. And then he said, ‘But this is my people.’ If you listen to Jay, Jay will let [Memphis] Bleek start his #1 album off. So he give them that utmost respect at all times and that’s what I do with my artists. I want their singles to be hotter than mine. That’s why Nicki on the show, that’s why Nicki comes out after me. It’s all a plan.”
Lil Wayne has been busy . He just completed two sold-out performances in Long Island, is featured on the cover of Interview magazine and appears on Birdman’s new single, “Get Money,” which just hit the Internet. Wayne’s forthcoming album, Tha Carter IV, is due in stores May 16.
