Donald Glover Promises ‘All Facets Of Me’ On I Am Donald Tour

'Community' star and mtvU Woodies host doesn't want tour to feel like 'Donald Glover the comedian opened for Childish Gambino,' his rap alter ego.

Donald Glover’s I Am Donald Tour kicks off in just over a month on April 16 in Iowa.

The mtvU Woodies host and “Community” star made a name for himself in the comedy world thanks to his group Derrick’s Comedy and writing on the hit NBC show “30 Rock.” Now, as Childish Gambino, Glover is giving hip-hop a try with his just-released untitled EP .

When MTV News caught up with him on Tuesday, Glover said he was excited for the world to see his show.

“We’ve done preview shows in L.A., and since then, we’ve made it tighter and better,” he promised. “I come out and I guess I do some comedy stuff. There’s video and there’s surprise guest stuff. There’s just, like, some fun stuff that’s in there. I want it to be a cohesive piece. I don’t want to be ‘Donald Glover the comedian opened for Childish Gambino.’ I want it to be more like, ‘These are all facets of me.’ ”

Glover said he hoped his show made people feel more comfortable with themselves, seeing as he hid the fact that he was a rapper for a long time out of fear.

” ‘Oh, people shouldn’t know this about me; they should just know me as a comedian,’ ” Glover recalled thinking. “But I’m kind of done with that. That’s bullsh–. I’m over that. I’m over trying to be cool. I’m over trying to be ‘rap cool.’ ”

The show won’t be a typical stand-up show or a typical rap concert, but rather a blend of both, Glover said. He’s not sure whether he’ll bring elements of his I Am Donald Tour to the Woodies, but he does know he wants to rub elbows with a certain 11-man rap collective.

“This Woodies thing is really just a big ploy for me to meet Odd Future Wolf Gang ,” he said of the Woodies performers . ” ‘So I get to meet Odd Future Wolf Gang? Cool.’ ”
