Wiz Khalifa recently wrapped up work on Rolling Papers, his album due next month on Atlantic Records. But the Pittsburgh rapper continues to stay on the same grind that delivered him the MTV News' Hottest Breakthrough MC crown last year and a selection as an 11 for '11 pick this year.
He released a mixtape offering, Cabin Fever, on Thursday night to satiate his fans before his official project drops on March 29. The nine-track effort includes the Lex Luger-produced "Taylor Gang," which arrived online earlier this month.
"Tay-lor Gang, Tay-lor Gang, Tay-lor Gang, Tay-lor," Wiz chants on the "Taylor Gang" hook, before going into a more melodic chorus. "And you know I'm repping the Taylors, all my weed from Cali, so you know I'm smoking flavors."
Kanye West protégé Big Sean pops up twice on Cabin Fever, most pronounced on the posse cut "Phone Numbers," also featuring Texas rapper Trae Tha Truth.
"Now when I get paid, my checks be looking like phone numbers," Wiz raps on the chorus. "I'm talking millions."
"Middle of You" featuring Chevy Woods (who also appears on "Taylor Gang") is more uptempo than most Wiz cuts. The clubby tune is geared toward the ladies, painting a picture of a party night. "You can find me, somewhere in the middle of you," Woods sings.
Wiz recently announced his 17-city Green Carpet Tour, kicking off April 1 in Raleigh, North Carolina. Last week, he hinted that he had a few tricks up his sleeve prior to his LP release, and this unexpected mixtape seems to be one of those.
"We got a couple of surprises along the way to keep people interested," he told MTV News. "But really, other than that, the album is done. We're really excited. Everyone is excited. [Warner Music Group executive] Lyor [Cohen] came through to a session. I got so much support from the single and going into the album. So when we do drop it, I think we'll get that response that everyone was expecting."
