On the “Saturday Night Live” episode that aired this past weekend, host Jesse Eisenberg’s meeting with Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg had everyone, including his “Social Network” co-star Armie Hammer, talking. While many viewers were entertained by the awkward encounter between the Oscar nominee and the man he plays in “The Social Network,” there was another “SNL” moment that didn’t leave some people amused.
GLAAD (the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) has posted a message on its website demanding an apology from NBC regarding a target="_blank">skit that aired on Saturday. The sketch in question is a fake commercial, featuring castmembers Bill Hader, Fred Armisen, Paul Brittain and Bobby Moynihan, for a fictional product called Estro-Maxx — a once-a-day hormone for pre-op transsexual men going through their sex change.
GLAAD’s call to action links to a petition, which has been signed by close to 3,000 people so far, that’s aimed at “SNL” producers and NBC to tell them “that transgender people deserve respect.” GLAAD calls the faux ad “a dangerous and blatantly anti-transgender segment” and argues that it degraded “the lives and experiences of transgender women.”
Jarrett Barrios, the president of GLAAD, weighed in on the sketch as well, stating, “The violence, discrimination and harassment that transgender Americans experience each and every day is no laughing matter. ‘Saturday Night Live’ is a touchstone of American comedy, but Saturday’s unfunny skit sends a destructive and dehumanizing message.”
GLAAD is asking that the skit be completely removed from NBC’s website and outlets like Hulu, while noting that it also has reached out for support from various advocacy groups, including the Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund and the Human Rights Campaign. According to E! Online, a rep for “SNL” was not immediately available for comment regarding the controversy.
