Melissa Joan Hart was a small-screen star by the time she was 17 thanks to her Nickelodeon series, "Clarissa Explains it All," and in the days before she became "Sabrina the Teenage Witch," 17-year-old Hart was trying to balance her bustling Hollywood career and her regular life. On this weekend's "When I Was 17," the "Melissa & Joey" star remembers throwing an out-of-control party at her dad's house.
"When I was 17, I'd go back home, and I'd like to see my friends," the upstate New York native says in the episode premiering Saturday, which also features Alison Sweeney and Flo Rida. "Weeks and months would go by that I wasn't seeing people that were familiar to me."
Her pal Nicole recalls a party plan that the TV star devised in order to reunite with her friends. "One time [Melissa] called and said, 'Listen, Nicole, I want to have a few people over my dad's house. Can you organize something?' " she remembers. "It's a small town, not too much happening, so if Melissa was coming home and said she wanted to have a party, everybody was going to show up."
Another friend, Trisha, explains that once the guests started coming, they didn't stop: "All these people started coming through the door.
It was unstoppable."
Hart still can't believe her get-together became such a rager. "Pretty much the whole town showed up," she recalls. "It was probably a few hundred people in and out all night. You couldn't shut it down. It became chaos."
"When I Was 17" — this week featuring Melissa Joan Hart, Alison Sweeney and Flo Rida — premieres Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV.
