Russell Brand appears to be catching a break. The tight-trousered British comedian will not face charges over an altercation he had last month with a paparazzo at Los Angeles International Airport.
E! News Online reported on Friday (October 8) that despite an arrest on suspicion of battery, prosecutors have decided not to press charges against Brand in the incident. The actor claimed afterward that he was simply trying to protect the dignity of his bride-to-be, Katy Perry, when an overly aggressive snapper allegedly attempted to take some up-skirt shots of the singer in the airport.
However, Brand, 35, will still have to appear in a Los Angeles courtroom on November 19 for a hearing, along with the pap who made a citizen's arrest following the scuffle. A judge will explain the laws governing their respective actions before officially telling them they're off the hook.
"This is the only action as of now," Los Angeles City Attorney's Office spokesman Frank Mateljan told E! News. "Based on the info, it has been determined that this is the most appropriate action at this time." At press time, Mateljan said he had not heard about either side planning to press charges.
Brand was interviewed by airport police and taken into custody on September 17 for suspected battery and later released on $20,000 bail. He broke his silence on the arrest a few days later when he tweeted, "Thanks for your sweet messages of support. After the tips I picked up in chokey [jail], I'm an infinitely more proficient criminal."
The British star appeared to keep his signature sense of humor about the whole incident, reacting with his typically witty charm by posting a Twitpic that appeared to depict a new tattoo of a butterfly on Perry's arm, along with his portion of the matching Sanskrit tats they both got last year, with the caption, "Mum. Me and 'chico' my new homey from the joint. I've ... joined his 'club.' Send condoms."
Perry appeared to confirm what sparked the incident when she tweeted, "If you cross the line & try and put a lens up my dress, my fiancé will do his job & protect me." While the scuffle happened as Brand and Perry were attempting to board a flight to Las Vegas, the "California Gurls" singer clearly made a later flight, having spent a wild bachelorette weekend with Rihanna in Vegas.
