The censors have been put on high alert, and the celebs have been given fair warning: Sardonic and sass-tacular comedian Chelsea Handler has been tapped to host the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards — airing live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 12, at 9 p.m. ET — and things are probably gonna get a little raw.
"Everyone knows that when you think of rap music and hip-hop you think of 'Chelsea Lately.' And that's why I will be hosting [the show]," Handler quipped when she broke the news on her show Wednesday night. "Let the ass-kissing begin," the funnywoman smiled.
Handler — best known for her exploits on the outrageous late-night talk show "Chelsea Lately" and her three best-selling, brutally honest (and brutally funny) books — won't pull any punches on VMA night. She'll also be making a little history, becoming only the second woman to fly solo as VMA host and the first since 1994, back when Roseanne Barr lorded over the proceedings.
She'll join a rapidly growing roster of performers (including [article id="1645613"]Kanye West[/article], [article id="1645460"]Florence and the Machine[/article], [article id="1645964"]B.o.B and Justin Bieber[/article]) and presenters (Ke$ha, Nicki Minaj, Ashley Greene and Ne-Yo) for the big show. And more names are being added daily.
While the stage will be overflowing with stars, the actual winners of the VMAs will be determined by you. Viewers can vote for their favorites on VMA.MTV.com, and Verizon suscribers can text VMA to 97979 (standard message rates apply). Voting closes for most categories on August 24, but the Best New Artist contest continues through September 12.
The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. Be there!
