Citing security concerns, the promoters behind the upcoming M.I.A.-headlined Hard L.A. concert canceled the event on Monday. According to the Los Angeles Times, the cancellation of the July 17 event came in the wake of the suspected drug-overdose death of a 15-year-old girl at last month's Electric Daisy Carnival rave at the Los Angeles Coliseum, which has caused increased scrutiny on the logistical demands of hosting large-scale electronic music events in the city. The show was to take place at downtown Los Angeles' State Historic Park and feature M.I.A., Die Antwoord, Flying Lotus, Rye Rye, N.E.R.D., Switch, Sleigh Bells and others.

The promoter of the event released a statement on Monday afternoon confirming the cancellation. "Hard LA M.I.A. this Saturday July 17 has been cancelled, but not due to the lack of support or the full approval from the personnel at the City of Los Angeles and California State Parks who have signed off on our comprehensive security plan."

At press time, it did not appear that a July 24 New York installment of the festival, also headlined by M.I.A., would be affected. Last week, the Times reported that the L.A. show was also rumored to be suffering from slow advance ticket sales for the 25,000-capacity event in the 36-acre park.

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted last week to establish a task force to examine and "enhance rave safety" in light of the incident at the Daisy Carnival. One supervisor on the board recommended a temporary rave moratorium at the Coliseum, which has already instituted a temporary ban on such events as owners consider whether to allow another large dance show to take place on the grounds.

It was unclear at press time how the latest incident will impact the summer's other big electronica event in Los Angeles, the August 21 Beyond Hard show, which is slated to take place at the Los Angeles Sports Arena. Tickets for the canceled event will be valid for the upcoming Hard Summer Music Festival, slated to take place on August 7 at the Los Angeles State Historic Park and feature sets from Soulwax, Crystal Castles, Major Lazer, Diplo and others.
