Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart were all but guaranteed to win Best Kiss going into this year's MTV Movie Awards, and sure enough, victory was theirs. But when the time came for the "Twilight" co-stars and are-they-or-aren't-they-dating duo to take the stage and lock lips in front of the whole world, there were no sparks to be found — unless you count the sparks of awkwardness.
Even Pattinson himself owned up to the awkwardness of the moment, telling MTV News after the smooch: "I had the best ideas last night, and I was telling everyone, 'Listen, just leave it to me, I've got it all under control.' ... I was telling everyone all these ideas. I gave them a whole selection, and no one thought they were funny, so then we ended up doing something which didn't work."
Now, one week later and with some perspective under his belt, how does Pattinson feel about how the kiss went down? Well, still pretty awkward. But while promoting "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse," Pattinson defended his original idea "to do something dumb."
"The idea of kind of doing this big romantic kiss, like Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams did [for 'The Notebook'], I couldn't do that," he told MTV News. "I'd be so embarrassed! So I just thought, 'We better do something dumb.' But then Kristen didn't want to do something dumb!"
Barring a rainstorm of cinematic romance in the next several months, Pattinson and Stewart will almost certainly find themselves nominated for Best Kiss again at next year's Movie Awards for "Eclipse" — a likelihood that is not lost on the "Twilight" heartthrob.
"Next time, I don't even know what I'll do," he laughed. "There are only so many variations on [the awkward kiss]."
Well, it's a good thing he has a year to work on some ideas.
