‘Transformers 3′ Director Promises ‘Killer Ending,’ 3-D For Trilogy’s Finale

'As a trilogy, it really ends,' Michael Bay says.

In one of the more un-surprising bits of news released this week, director Michael Bay confirmed that his third Transformers movie will be released in 3-D. The blockbuster-making explosions enthusiast also revealed they’ve done away with the highly criticized “dorky comedy,” named the film’s new villain and promised a solid ending to the trilogy.

“One thing we’re getting rid of is what I call the ‘dorky comedy,’ ” Bay told USA Today on Thursday (June 10). “So the twins, the two bumbling, slang-spewing robots? They’re basically gone,” he said, and singled out actor John Turturro (Agent Simmons), who will provide comic relief for the film.

Loyal fans of the ’80s source material will be excited to learn that the film’s villain is Shockwave, the one-eyed robot recognizable by his signature laser cannon, who became dictator of the Transformers’ home world of Cybertron after the other Autobots and Decepticons journeyed to Earth.

Major plot details are naturally under wraps, but Bay hinted that the story involves the space race between Russia and the U.S. and the Transformers’ role in it being one of the planet’s most dangerous secrets. “The movie is more of a mystery,” Bay says. “It ties in what we know as history growing up as kids with what really happened.”

For those who still have issues with the much-maligned sequel, Bay said he accepts “some of the criticism,” but cited the film’s tight production schedule and quick turnaround time as reasons why certain elements of the film didn’t work. “It was very hard to put [the sequel] together that quickly after the writers’ strike [of 2007-08],” Bay said.

He promises fans a “final crescendo” and fitting end to the trilogy, however. “It’s not three multiple endings,” the director said. “As a trilogy, it really ends,” he says. “It could be rebooted again, but I think it has a really killer ending.”
