'Footloose' Star Julianne Hough Wants 'Edgy' Actor To Replace Chace Crawford

Someone 'a little rough' should be cast in the reboot's lead role, co-star says.

With the lead role in the "Footloose" remake now vacant after Chace Crawford stepped away from the flick due to scheduling conflicts with "Gossip Girl," his former co-star in the reboot of the 1984 classic, Julianne Hough, admitted that she's also been contending with a busy schedule.

"Yeah, well, it's been such a back-and-forth thing with scheduling and everything," Hough told MTV News on the Academy of Country Music Awards red carpet on Sunday. "And I understand [Crawford's] schedule was off. My schedule's almost off. It's still working its way through things."

Crawford is not the movie's only departure: "Footloose" was without a director after Kenny Ortega dropped out of the project, although screenwriter Craig Brewer has since signed on to direct, according to Variety. And Crawford was attached only after Zac Efron departed.

Asked who should tackle the role of Ren, played by Kevin Bacon in the original, Hough had no particular casting ideas. "I guess I read somewhere they're doing a nationwide search," she said. "So, I'm excited!"

It was just a year ago that Crawford told MTV News he was confident about his dancing chops. "I hope so, right? I got the part," he said. "I hope they know I can dance. I don't know. It's a fun script, and actually stepping out of my shell and doing the dancing thing is probably the most exciting part."

Former "Dancing With the Stars" pro Hough does think whoever nabs the role of Ren should have some specific qualities.

"I don't know! Somebody edgy and a little rough," she said.
