Taylor Kitsch Enlists In ‘Battleship’ Flick

The 'Friday Night Lights' star will reunite with Peter Berg for board game adaptation.

Taylor Kitsch has a lot of science fiction in his future. The “John Carter of Mars” star will reteam with his “Friday Night Lights” executive producer Peter Berg for “Battleship,” an alien-invasion adventure that finds its roots in the classic Milton Bradley board game.

Kitsch is the first announced actor to join the cast. The Hollywood Reporter‘s Heat Vision blog reveals that he will play Naval commander Alex Hopper, described as “wildly spirited” and “a great seaman but a lousy politician.” Still to be cast roles include the female lead and a Japanese commander.

The Kitsch casting likely means that another contender, “The Hurt Locker” star Jeremy Renner, is now out. Renner revealed in February that he was up for a starring role in the board-game adaptation. It was later learned that he had been cast in Paul Thomas Anderson’s next film, “The Master,” though that news was never officially confirmed.

Kitsch is best-known for his starring role as a troubled football player on the NBC series “Friday Night Lights.” He also played the mutant Gambit in last year’s Marvel spin-off, “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.” “John Carter” and “Battleship” aren’t out until 2012, but Kitsch will likely next be seen in the Canadian/ South African joint venture “The Bang Bang Club,” in which he stars with Malin Akerman and Ryan Phillippe as a combat photographer in South Africa during the last days of apartheid. No U.S. release date has been announced yet for “Bang Bang.”

Berg revealed a few details about “Battleship” to Cinematical.com late last year. The movie will follow a small international flotilla — five ships, just like the game — that is somehow separated from the main fleet and left to face an invading alien force called the Regents. Berg compared the aliens’ look to Davey Jones from “Pirates of the Caribbean.”

Berg also confirmed that at some point during the movie, a character will say the line: “You sunk my battleship!”
