The first teaser trailer for director Edgar Wright's [movie id="384759"]"Scott Pilgrim vs. the World"[/movie] made its online premiere Thursday (March 25) on the iTunes Movie Trailers site, presenting all of the combat, rock music and pop-culture references that comic book fans have been hoping for.
The trailer begins by proposing a simple question: "Have you ever met someone you love so much it hurts?" But what starts out as a harmless boy-meets-girl tale quickly escalates into something considerably more violent, as Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) learns that in order to date his new crush Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), he must defeat her seven evil exes, an intimidating group that includes a vegan telepath (Brandon Routh), a pro skateboarder (Chris Evans) and her former college roommate (Mae Whitman).
It doesn't look like an easy journey for Scott: The middle portion of the trailer is dominated by footage of Ramona's former loves putting him through the physical ringer with energy bursts, impossibly powerful punches and other wince-inducing injuries. But Scott isn't entirely helpless. We also get a glimpse of his own combat proficiency with a laser sword, an acoustic guitar and his bare fists.
"We all have baggage," Ramona says, trying to reassure Scott about his physically exhausting quest.
"Well," he retorts, "my baggage doesn't try and kill me every five seconds!"
"Scott Pilgrim vs. the World," which heads to theaters on August 13, is based on the Oni Press graphic novel series written and illustrated by Bryan Lee O'Malley. The sixth and final volume of the series, "Scott Pilgrim's Finest Hour," arrives in stores on July 20, 2010.
