Daniel Radcliffe Says Shooting Climactic 'Harry Potter' Scene Was 'Really Tough'

'I put a lot of pressure on myself,' actor says of 'Deathly Hallows' face-off against Lord Voldemort.

In the summer of 2009, while Daniel Radcliffe was in New York promoting the release of "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," he admitted to MTV News that he was "dreading" eventually filming one climactic scene in [movie id="342213"]"Deathly Hallows,"[/movie] the two-part finale of the boy-wizard series: Harry's final walk into the forest to face off against Lord Voldemort.

More than six months later, that scene is behind the 20-year-old actor, but getting it right took days worth of shooting — and a whole lot of anxiety. "It was really hard," he told MTV News recently after shooting a PSA for the nonprofit Trevor Project. "It was one of those scenes where by the third day of it, we were going, 'I don't know if I like this one as much as I did in the beginning.' It was really, really tough."

Back in the summer, Radcliffe took solace in the fact that Gary Oldman, who plays the deceased Sirius Black (a character briefly resurrected in the scene for a sort of pre-battle pep talk with Harry), would be on set during the shoot.

"I don't know whether it is from some kind of quite pure and childish desire to want to impress him or out of the fact that he just gets something out of me — having him around for some reason on the fifth film was such an amazing thing for me as an actor, and hopefully he'll have that effect again," Radcliffe said at the time.

And sure enough, as Radcliffe told us afterward, "Gary was brilliant."

Nonetheless, Radcliffe struggled throughout the many days it took to shoot the scene. "It was just one of those scenes where I think because I put a lot of pressure on myself to get it right beforehand, I wasn't able to relax and enjoy it as I might have done otherwise," he said. "I was slightly annoyed about that."
