The release date for [artist id="510062"]Lil Wayne[/artist]'s Rebirth album keeps getting pushed back, but there's one date that's definite: Thursday, January 7.
That's when he'll unveil the video for the latest single off his so-called "rock" album, on MTV, MTV2, mtvU, MTV Jams, MTV Hits and on MTV.com (we're seriously giving him the rock-star treatment). But why wait until Thursday? We've got an exclusive clip of the video for you right now.
Directed by Chris Robinson (who's done work for everyone from Alicia Keys and Busta Rhymes to Wale and Young Jeezy), "On Fire" features Wayne in full-on rock-star mode, fedora tipped back on his head, guitar slung over his shoulder. A reel-to-reel tape machine rolls in the background as he grips the mic stand and works his way up and down the fretboard, while the beat — a sample of Amy Holland's synth-y "She's on Fire," from the "Scarface" soundtrack (of course) — surges behind him. Then the synthesizers fade away and a slurry Cool & Dre beat slinks in and, suddenly, things aren't very rock and roll anymore.
But that hardly matters. Wayne delivers his lines in a heavy, Auto-Tuned wheeze, and makes his way through a party, one packed with a bevy of ladies who are totally ready to rock and/or roll. And just when things start to get interesting ... well, the sneak peek ends. Such is the way with teaser clips like this: They're designed to leave you wanting more.
And while we're still not sure when Rebirth will hit stores (some reports have it coming out this summer), perhaps the "On Fire" video can tide his fans over. From the looks of things, it's certainly going to rock — even if it doesn't.
